| Gravy Hole Rank: Oddie | Socialist Workers posted on: 11/19/2003 12:21:01 PM Do the three socialist workers still sell Socialist Workers News at the bottom of the New St ramp every friday? If so, is the long haired one with glasses still there? I forget his name. There was always a rivalry with the bloke selling the Mail. I can still remember the crys of "Heee Maayy" followed by a retort of "Sooshhht". Sooshhht was quite a good read in a kind of Thatch bashing way. |

replied on: 1/21/2004 5:29:21 PM They've been replaced by those protesters with the picture of the skinned fox on their trestle table. They always seem to be in town when I am. They must have at least sixteen signatures by now! Good work! Did anyone ever buy the 'Socialist Worker'? Did the 'Big Issue' crowd muscle in on their patch and kill their business off? |

replied on: 1/21/2004 6:37:52 PM SW or as it was then the International Socialist Party, only the paper was known as SW, had a political relevance in the 1970s. Labour were dead on their feet and the Communist party tied up in internal power struggles. Their most important contribution to politics was as a vanguard for anti-fascist action until they were usurped by Red Wedge and Rock Against racism. You still meet a few of the old Trotskyites mumbling into their beer in the Digbeth area. |

replied on: 1/21/2004 7:14:39 PM Is this not a prime time for a resurgence since all left wing interests in Westminster are severely lifeless. I once bought a copy. Didn't read it though. |

replied on: 1/21/2004 11:00:54 PM The left is unfortunately dead. Blame the USA and globalization. The SWP used to have great banners on protests but we used to cut the words Socialist Workers Party from the top. This had a twofold benefit, we were not associated with the Menchevicks, it left a nice sharp stick to poke the nazis with. |

replied on: 2/24/2004 11:31:05 AM I saw a whole bunch of "sparts" in town last week! They were just down from Brasso, at the junction of New St and High St. There must have been seven or eight of them - one even had a megaphone... No one even looked at them... Maybe they were ghosts! |
