I like Lamar. I like him more when he's allowed to be spontaneous than when he's delivering the more obviously pre-scripted stuff, though.

What's to like about a man whose act consists of little more than puerile put-downs of easy targets?
It's like watching an overgrown playground bully at times.

I've always held Lemmy to be a good judge of character, and he reportedly came very close to twatting both Lamar and "his fat friend" when he was on the show.

This would be the same Lemmy who stormed off set after they'd finished filming. It's a mistake to call him a good judge of anything in particular.

Lamar does pick on easy targets (like Lemmy), yes, but with a level of bile and vitriol that I happen to find hillarious.

I agree Russ, Lemmy is into collecting Nazi memorabilia which I would have thought precluded him as a judge of good character. He probably reckons Hitler was just a bit of a lad but who meant well.

IMO Lamarr's like a latter-day Humphrey Lyttelton, famously having a pop at Lionel Blair on a weekly basis on I'm Sorry. Targets don't get no easier than that. e.g.

"Michael Aspel was amazed during the filming of Give Us A Clue to see how well Lionel performed when asked to do a charade of the author of A Town Called Alice. You could see Nevil Shute in his face as Lionel pulled him off with one hand." etc

No, Lemmy is a genius.
The only man in the world who can make white cowboy boots not look gay.

I'm sure you could have a fair stab at that yourself. I think you should, in fact.

I love Motorhead and Lemmy really, but come on. You can be both an iconic figure in a good band and a bit of a tit at times.

Actually, what Lemmy really thinks of Hitler is revealed in the following quote from an interview in "Zero Tolerance" magazine -

"He was the first rock 'n' roll star; the way he controlled the crowd, the drama, the lightshow. Churchill was a great orator, but Hitler could really work a crowd into a frenzy. A great showman."

Can't argue with that.

Yes you can, even leaving aside the selective grounds on which he chooses to base his description. His first clause, I would humbly submit, is innacurate: I've got Niccolo Paganini down as the first rock 'n' roll star.

Geoff Chaucer's the one for me. They were wild times he instigated, and very much in favour of the proles, canonising the language of real people. Surely RnR has/had something to do with that? And sexing. Old Geoff did a good line in promoting the making of babies, or having a good try.

I agree with you Russ. I'm thinking maybe MrH didn't really rock or roll for the ordinary fella. Although Triumph of the Will was surely the first preachy pop promo.

The stars of rock 'n' roll prior to rock 'n' roll

If this is going to end up an excercise of one-up-manship then I'll try to put it to bed immediately. Sun Tzu, sixth century BC - "If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him."

That's about the most succinct expression of this rock 'n' roll lark that I can possibly imagine.

Maybe Lemmy feels some affinity with Adolf due to them both being speed-freaks.
As Sadie Plant reveals in her book "Writing on Drugs" (in which I have a walk-on part), at one time Hitler was injecting himself with methamphetamine eight times a day - excessive even by Lemmy's standards.

Also those black SS uniforms were very rock 'n' roll, weren't they?
As Woody Allen once said, what woman has ever fantasized about being ravaged by a man dressed as a liberal?

Uniforms are not rock 'n' roll, whatsoever their colour.

They may both enjoy/have enjoyed the ol' diet pills, but can you see Lemmy as a vegetarian? It doesn't strike me as likely.

Ultimately, Ian might be a saft sod who likes Adolph but I doubt the feelings would have been mutual.

If we're looking for a modern parallel then the pointy lopsided haircuts of your modern-day emo fellas are a bit like a more extreme version of the Hitler fringe.

More extreme than Hitler. Imagine that.

This is far too late to be a helpful recommendation, but I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that Mistress are playing with thrashers-extroadinaire Municipal Waste at The Flapper this evening. And you know how much I hate being remiss.

This will be the headbanging event of the century.

Thanks Russ. Really enjoyed the gig - especially as I just wandered in without paying (they must have assumed I was Mick Kenney's dad).

Now all I have to do is get up for work in about three hours time.
