Anyone heard of the Velvet Underpants?
posted on: 1/11/2004 5:03:10 PM

There was a punk group from Brum in the 90's called The Velvet Underpants. All their songs were sung with a brummie accent and there were references to Brum in the lyrics. One song was 'Geena the queen of Acocks green'
anothe song was called 'Corpse shagger' and went:
'Said you was goin down the fighting cocks,
with me and mox and danny.
but your down the graveyard shoving your cock in some poor dead birds fanny!'
Their songs containd a fair bit of swearing and poor tase lyrics, but they were great to see. Only saw 'em once and that was in Worcester in about 96/96. They split shortly after I think.
BTW I like the site, and its about time someone stuck up for Brum. I'm not a Brummie (I live in worcestershire) but I do like the city.
Keep up the good work

I was going to say that.

Did I dream a big bit of graffiti in their honour on the train track to Tyseley?

i used to be in a band that supported the velvet underpants a few times and i used to work with the singer.
they were excellent! they briefly had a deal for one record which was a strange cd released arround '92 with them on one side and the mac lads on the other. there logo was the same as the two tone dance craze but obvioulsy changed to pants craze with the nob hanging out of a pair of pants logo.

The 'Velvet Underpants' graffiti was a mainstay of the Solihull - Moor Street train line through-out the 90s. Is it still there?

The velvet underpants were big on the Brum punk scene in the early to mid 90s. They release 3 tape albums with quality songs like 'not me mate', 'corpse shagger' and 'dog shit vacum bikes'.

The singer was a bloke called Jonny who called himself 'Matt Zoid', the guitarist was 'Captain Crapcore', the drummer was Jonny's brother calling himself 'Hugh Manshit' and I forget the other bloke's name.

Hugh was responsible for the grafitti on the back of the 'Cousins' furniture shop that you can see from the train on the way to Birmingham from Solihull. Cheers me up every time I'm on the way to work!

Jonny used to work in the cafe at the swimming baths in Solihull where he used to serve microwaved chips and wham bars. Most of the time for free if he could get away with it.

Does anyone remember Jonny or know what the band are up to other than my mother who was convinced that he was a smack head?

Im in a band with John and Jim from the pants which was formed after they split up. they are still all mates though. and no, john wasnt a smack head, think it must have been all the wham bars.

Yep Mopsy and Danny Drongo.
you can see them on the 5th July at Ivans benefit gig at the Flapper and Firkin.
I think there will be a re-mastered Velvet underpants Cd for sale.
