Low Art Thrill? Nein danke!
replied on: 2/20/2004 9:10:09 PM

So where were all you lot when the acid house/rave scene kicked off? Admittedly most of the best raves were either in London or somewhere out in the Home Counties countryside, but there were a few good ones in and around Brum.
Any stories/trip reports from those heady days?

I think I remember Delicious Monster. Weren't they the ones with the sexy singer and the poor rhythm section?

I wouldn't have called her sexy. Not unless you like pigs, but she was a decent singer and I object to us females being considered objects of sexual desire rather than judged on equal terms with males.

No, their rhythm section was hot - quite unorthodox (lots of counter-rhythms, if that's the right term) - and probably the best Brum has produced by a long shot (but, let's face it, there ain't much competition, is there?). Does anyone know what happened to them? I've still got lots of their records.

I've never heard of The International. Are they still going? What's so s h i t about them, Bounds?

Actually, I think I'll withdraw my previous statement. After trying to think of some half decent Brum bands, I've come to the conclusion that there hasn't been very many. In fact, it has produced some high calibre crap.

I'm thinking in particular of a band called Low Art Thrill. Ever heard of them? I doubt if anyone has. They barely registered on anyone's musical radar.

They were the biggest pile of w a n k I've ever seen. Their frontman was a laughable chinless toff called Jeremy (seriously!) with a David Bowie obsession (in his dreams!), and the rest of them were so effeminate they looked scared to play their instruments too hard in case they broke them. Needless to say, they disappeared without a trace a long time ago and are probably stacking shelves in Kwiksave now.

Birdland came from Brum, didn't they? Anyone remember them? Trying to forget?

And then there's Mickey Greaney! Nuff said.

Peaky, Peaky, Peaky... bloody hell, you really do seem to have issues with these Low Art Thrill people!

All good bands - a couple of them were truly great, but that was back in the heady halcyon days of the '80s, when you could even see a decent band at the Mermaid... But it's easy to remember the good ones... There were some terrible bands back then...
Dear old Peaky Monster is whining on about the cultural desert of the mid 90s when most bands were worse than Ocean Colour S h i t e.
But I'm not sure this is all about music... I think Peaky needs to tell us where this deep and rather disturbing hatred of (the fairly obscure) Low Art Thrill comes from... I only remember them ever playing one gig in Birmingham...
Sounds personal to me... More than musical differences!!!

Apart from Terry and Gerry and the dreadful Rumblefish, I think Jones has just named more than 3 which were superior. Mighty Mighty, for example, were an excellent band. Built Like A Car. Classic.

I think you're looking for meanings that aren't really there. I praise good bands like Mighty Mighty and Delicious Monster and criticise shite bands like Low Art Thrill, Birdland and The Bicycle Thieves. They're all fairly obscure bands in the big scheme of things, but the former are better than the latter. Sorry to disappoint you.

You heard them on Hollyoaks? Well, if that's not proof that they were shit, I don't know what is.

I'm beginning to wonder whether ping, jones, UrbanBeachcomber and officerdibble are one and the same. They rarely post on any other thread and it's a bit odd that four people should show so much interest in a no-mark band like Low Art Thrill.

Let's face it, you can't all be Low Art Thrill fans: they never had any. Isn't it about time we unmasked you, Jeremy? Show thyself, coward! Are Kwiksave a decent employer?

I'm just someone who visits the site occasionally and has enjoyed some of your posts in the past and happened to have heard of Delicious Monster. You just seem to have something very personal going on here and if me posting a message puts me on the end of your vitriol as well then you can sod off!

You mean that you're a fan? Of mine? I'm honoured.

Nothing personal, by the way, I'm just a music fan with a good memory.

Just having a, far too self referential, joke. Y'see I was the the singer - and we did, indeed, have a poor rythmn section (i was the basist too).

Nah, we're not still going - although there are, I'm sure, still plenty of copies of our ep available - there's about 20 in my wardrobe for a start.

If you want a laugh, there are some mp3s to listen to here.

Hey, Bounds - I've got quite a few records by Brum bands. Any chance of getting them on the site so people can make informed decisions instead of looking back through rose-tinted specs?

Why does everyone try to sound American when they sing? What's wrong with singing like where you come from? I wanna hear some Brummies singing. It's nothing to be ashamed of and it would certainly be a bit different.

Erm, reckon there'd be a few copyright issues. Posting mp3s is a surefire way to get shut down.

What bands are we talkign tho - maybe we could get thier permission?

Adrenaline Kick

Has anyone ever heard of a local band called Adrenaline Kick? It's just that I saw a poster in the Flapper & Firkin this afternoon advertising their gig there next Saturday, which describes them as "techno-rock infusion," which sounds like it could be interesting.
