| DrVeraJenkins old dear Rank: Jasper | Our Alton posted on: 1/21/2004 10:27:45 PM Has anyone mentioned Alton Douglas, that nice man with glasses who publishes all the books full of old newspaper cuttings? They have names like "Birmingham in the War Years" and "Birmingham in the War Years 2", etc. What a genius our Alton is! You youngsters should take note, this is how to become very rich in your old age. Start collecting back editions of the Evening Mail, theatre leaflets, entrance tickets to the science museum, bank statements, invoices and all the other odd bits of rubbish that normally you would throw away... and then when you reach 60, put it all into scrap books and publish it under different themes. You are sure to make millions because as we get old, none of us can resist looking at old bus tickets and small ads from the Birmingham Post. Well done our Alt! |

replied on: 1/21/2004 10:47:01 PM ...and of course the other good money raising scheme is paintings of Birmingham trams. Have you noticed how this seems to have become quite a craze these days? There used to be just the one gentleman who painted those really classy paintings of trams in well known places, like outside Villa Park and coming up Corporation Street, you've seen them hanging up in the entrance halls of old folk's residential homes, but recently every bugger with a set of wax crayons seems to be churning out pictures of trams and most of them, I have to say, do seem to be copied from photos in Alton's books. So here's the trick young people, start painting buses now and by the time you're 70 they will be worth an absolute mint. |

replied on: 1/21/2004 11:02:11 PM ..in fact...and I'm sorry to seem a little obsessed with Alton (he is quite handsome actually) someone else has now published a book about Alton! This has the potential to become slightly incestuous though. Because will Alton now feel obliged to publish a book about them? Maybe this is what happens when we've exhausted all the local history subjects, W.H.Smith set up a new area of shelves for 'Books About Local History Authors'. |

replied on: 1/22/2004 12:11:26 AM I think we're a long way from exhausting all the local history subjects yet, V. For example, I don't think Douglas, Chinn, & co. have produced a book on Birmingham Fish (I mean the jack bannocks in the cut, not the ones down the market), Drunks/Tramps or Shootings. |

replied on: 1/26/2004 7:42:48 PM As long as you don't piss it up the wall, or waste it promoting your dubious club nights, I don't really care. I'd like an acknowledgement though. It's the least I/we can ask, surely, for all the time and effort we've put in over the days, weeks, nay, months. Immortality, that's all we crave. Can you do it for us? Can you? Can you, really? |

I've tried sending some classy shots of car wrecks in the river Cole, etc., but they keep getting sent back. have you got a postal address I can send them to? I've seen the man beneath the mache, by the way. I know why he wears it now. Terrible disfigurement. Never seen anything quite like it. |

replied on: 1/29/2004 8:58:02 PM What about a regular magazine Bound, and then we can all help you? Form a social firm - and we'll be your editorial team. I quite fancy an Aunty V's Problems Page and I can help out with the Horoscope (Aunty V reads the soppy filter coffee granules). What's On at the Help the Aged Clubs? Aunty V takes older readers down memory lane - my first article would be something like "Did you turn off the gas before you left the house this morning?" or "Ten ways to tell your son in law apart from the care attendant up the respite centre - or does it really matter?" I've got loads of old bus tickets we can reproduce an all. |
