| DrVeraJenkins old dear Rank: Jasper | Steve Gibbons posted on: 2/17/2004 11:25:58 PM When I was a young girl in the 1920s my mother used to take us up to the Palais on Monument Road to watch this really old man in a teddy boy suit. And she'd say, "Vera, that's the great Steve Gibbons who had an old dance hall hit with Tulane and one day he will invent rock and roll but Chuck Berry and Little Richard will steal it from him". I wonder whatever happened to that old rocker Steve? Must be six feet under be now. |

replied on: 2/18/2004 10:03:36 PM You must be joking me! How can Steve still be alive? Maybe you're on about one of his grandchildren. You'll be telling me next that dear old Trevor Burton is still leading his big band up the Barton Arms. Ho! Ho! No seriously, there should be a bronze statue of Mr Gibbons put up in Centernary square where the Forward sculpture used to be. Leaning on the bonnet of one of his cars. Smoking a bronze ciggie. |

replied on: 2/19/2004 7:22:02 PM quote: Back in the late 70's the Steve Gibbons Band toured America with the Who and were signed to Pete Townshend's record label. They also supported the Who once at Stafford Bingly Hall, where I managed to get on to a gantry overlooking the backstage area, and could see Keith Moon throwing things at them from behind the speakers. Trevor Burton now plays every Monday night upstairs at the Actress & Bishop, while Bob Lamb, the former SGB drummer, has a residency there on Sunday nights, and Steve's eldest son Jake DJ's there on Saturdays. You'll have to come along one of the nights Mrs J and renew your acquaintance with Boogie, who can always be found there these days. |

replied on: 2/23/2004 10:18:31 PM Thank you for the interesting information MittonsMate. You young people are so knowlegable about pop music. It would be nice to see young Boogie again. Yes I remember seeing him around Harborne quite a lot some years ago. Anyone remember his friend Naz? I used to go in and clean for Naz in Regent road, he was a painter and decorator. They were a nice crowd. Steven's mom lived just off Harborne High Street if my memory serves me right. She'd say, "Vera bab, have you seen the state of my lad Steven? He's turning into one of those Teddy Boys". Happy days! |
