replied on: 4/14/2004 12:26:28 PM As I read that, Peaky, I imagined the chap from Neds saying that in a Guardian interview. Pfffff! Smiley Culture - there's another. Though Police Officer is hardly a Brum song as such. Xanadu is though - didn't the Bee Gees write the song for Olivia Newton John based on their euphoric experiences here? |

replied on: 4/14/2004 12:49:51 PM There's always ELO's Mr Blue Sky. Despite the Bluenose connatations a song that all of Brum can be rightly proud of. Might just be a big hit again, as is used on the soundtrack of that spiffing new Micheal Gondry/Jim Carey film what i just saw. "Endless Sunshine of the spotless mind" (could well be this years' Donnie Darko) |

replied on: 4/14/2004 2:59:37 PM Why does a blue sky have to be male? I suppose the opposite, a grey sky, is therefore female. If good (weather) = male and bad (weather) = female, then the only way one can read this is that ELO are either women-hating homesexuals or mysogynistic heterosexuals. It is highly unlikely that the line "Hey you with the pretty face" is addressed to a male with a pretty face. It is more likely to have been addressed to a female with a pretty face (please correct me if you know that ELO are queer), so the next line "Welcome to the human race" suggests that all females who have not yet been welcomed (by ELO) are not part of the human race: that we are somehow subhuman or inhuman, further strengthening my claim that ELO are misogynists. The only reference to a city I can find in the lyrics, by the way, is negative (see lines 8 & 9): Sun is shining in the sky There ain’t a cloud in sight It’s stopped raining, everybody’s in a play And don’t you know It’s a beautiful new day. Running down the avenue See how the sun shines brightly In the city On the streets where once was pity Mr. Blue Sky is living here today. Chorus: Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why You had to hide away for so long Where did we go wrong? Chorus Hey you with the pretty face Welcome to the human race A celebration Mr. Blue Sky’s up there waiting And today is the day we’ve waited for Chorus Hey there, Mr. Blue We’re so pleased to be with you Look around, see what you do Everybody smiles at you. Hey there, Mr. Blue We’re so pleased to be with you Look around, see what you do Everybody smiles at you. Mr. Blue, you did it right But soon comes Mr. Night Creeping over Now his hand is on your shoulder Never mind -- I’ll remember you this... I’ll remember you this way. Chorus Hey there, Mr. Blue We’re so pleased to be with you Look around, see what you do Everybody smiles at you. It appears to imply that Birmingham (if they had their hometown specifically in mind) or cities in general are/were pitiful places. Hardly a Brumsong, then. Not only that, but the lyrics on the whole are the sort of shite you'd expect in a sixth-form poetry competition. |

replied on: 4/14/2004 4:13:10 PM Yes, The Au Pairs were a Kings Heath (but, of course!) and Moseley concoction... Do Felt count? Laurence ran away to London which seems to make him a traitor... Broadcast - 'Lights Out' |

replied on: 4/15/2004 3:19:05 PM Just had a quick look at the vinyl - it was 'My Face is on Fire'...I'd forgotten The Misunderstood and Quentin Crisp were on it...I need to get another copy of 'Miniatures' - mine is scratched to destruction: I saw it in Barcelona last year, but it was in the same condition... My young lady used to know the chap when he lived in Brum, so I'll ask her later when she returns from the wage slavery... |

replied on: 6/26/2004 12:18:35 AM "G'day, g'day, how you doin'? Well strike a light, lah lah lah lah" I forget the rest. It's Ed Doolan's theme tune. I don't know who sings it though. I expect Malcolm Stent has done some good ones too. And Don McClean. Or how about "Ready Eddy steady, hold the gun steady" by Fashion? Or what about "is he live or dead, do you really know what's in his head" Wasn't that Tony Butler's theme tune? |

replied on: 6/28/2004 2:47:21 PM Slade were from Wolverhampton I think. The Beat ("Mirror in the Bathroom", "Save it for Later", "I Confess", "Stand Down Margaret") were from Brum. The Specials were from Coventry so I guess we can't count them, though I think they were supported on a tour by Dexy's at some point. |

replied on: 1/10/2005 11:30:11 PM What about "Black Country chainstore massacre" by Pop will eat itself, or, in a similar vein Falling in love with love by David Hughes. David Hughes (50s crooner and opera singer) was from Bournville. Pretty sure PWEI is Brummy - I know one of the band's uncles and he comes from Sheldon. Just more examples of the rich and diverse culture that is Birmingham. |
