King Kong

There is a campaign to bring back to Birmingham the King Kong sculpture by Nicholas Monroe that you may remember from your youth. Back in 1974, the council sought to have it removed from Manzoni gardens (showing the usual tin ear for public opinion). It lived on Deritend for a bit, then moved to an outdoor market near Edinburgh. That market closed recently, and the current owner has said Birmingham can have it back if city councillors offers it a "firm markets pitch" (does that mean "permanent installation in the rag market" or " a lot of money"?). It's easy to picture city councillors muttering that Kong no longer has any social relevance, oblivious to the current international blockbuster, and passing up on the deal once again.

Perhaps Bounder should run a BiNS home page campaign story?

And where should the KK be situated if it does come back? I suggest on the side of Perrets Folly. It could be marketed as "Peter Jackson World".

I wondered when this one would come up.

Fond memories, I was taken to see it aged ten, after a trip to the Odeon to see the new Bond, I think it was Live and Let Die, followed by a nice pizza in Gino's.

Gino's was an establishment I was later banned from a mere ten years later for brawling with a drunken German. He had accidentally bumped into me coming out of the bogs and he advised me I was sub-human scum. I pointed out he was a Deutcher untermensch and well, it all kicked off.

Why did they give him nipples but no belly button? I can understand leaving the knob off.

And why does he look like an albino? was he ever the proper colour?

I'd like to see him situated in front of Brasso the Bull. It'd look like Mr Kong (I don't believe his monarchy was ever legally or formally recognised) was either reprimanding Mr Brasso (for an ill placed spot of fertiliser, perchance?) or conducting him (to join the Salvation Army in a sweet rendition of away in skull island. That would be funny funny funny.

Unless they're going to stick him on top of the Rotunda or the BT Tower, then I think we should just forget about him.
Mind you, I'm sure quite a few people would say the same thing about Mitton.

This is a follow up to Brad's post. I work with him at an ad agency in Detroit. We wanted to use a picture of some kind of big statue like King Kong or Godzilla in an ad. When we googled "King Kong statue," one of the image choices was the shot on this page. It's really perfect - we can't find anything that we'd rather use. But we need to get in touch with the person who took the picture. Can anyone on here help with that?
