| peakyblinder old hand Rank: Chinny | Satnam Rana posted on: 7/22/2008 9:40:53 PM Or Satnav, as I rather affectionately call her. "Born and brought up in Wolverhampton, Satnam knew she wanted to work in TV and Radio from the tender age of 10. She started by bombarding programmes like Why Don't You, Blue Peter and John Craven's Newsround with story ideas. Determined to work for the BBC, Satnam embarked upon a "grand plan" during her teenage years, working for various radio stations in the Black Country. In fact, she remembers visiting Pebble Mill when she was 16 and meeting some of the reporters and presenters she now works with! Studying soon took over and Satnam left her home town of Wolverhampton to go up north to Lancaster University where she studied French/History. She spent her spare time Djing and working on the university radio station ' Radio Bailrigg'. Her course took her to France for a year as an assistant teacher - an experience she'll never forget and one that made her all the more determined to pursue journalism. Satnam left the green pastures of the North in 1999 and headed to London landing her first paid job in journalism at BBC Radio Five Live as a researcher. She joined BBC Midlands Today in 2002 and says it's the best decision she made. She particularly enjoys the opportunity to travel around the region working on news stories. She equally loves presenting breakfast news and gets a buzz from live television. "The new studios at the Mailbox are very impressive and a dream come true to work in" says Satnam."Everyday is different which is why the job is so motivating." In fact Satnam says 'she's living her dream …."I never feel as if I am coming to work because this is what I've wanted to do all along. I guess journalism has become a way of life'. No one is allowed to pinch her just in case she wakes up from her dream! Switching off is a difficult task for this busy lady. On her day off Satnam produces and co-presents Midlands Masala on BBC WM which is broadcast on a Friday night between 9 and midnight. And when she does have some spare time she enjoys spending it with family and friends. She is a very capable party organiser and loves entertaining. And if there's a dance floor in sight ..well this disco diva is usually on it!" Surely, though, if you want to work in TV and radio there are more useful degress to do than French/History at Lancaster. |

replied on: 7/24/2008 7:34:33 AM Well she's certainly a lot better than Yvonne Gaskill on Central, who always sounds as if she's talking to a little kid who's fallen over and grazed their knee. In fact, come to think of it, I find quite a few female news presenters irritating in some way or another, whether it's the appallingly smug and condescending Penny Smith on GMTV, the shouting Scotswoman on Newsnight, or even our own adenoidal Arti. Although I do quite like the one who co-presents the local news with Nick Owen. Always makes me think of that Rolling Stones song off their Some Girls album - "Far Away Eyes." |
