So, BollyWHAT? bets you believe that piracy is the biggest threat to Bollywood's profits. Think again, O innocent! SONY Music Entertainment (India) Pvt. Ltd. has decided to crack down on the real culprits: those of us who share film lyrics from movies whose soundtracks Sony distributes. That's right: the company sent an e-mail to BollyWHAT? on October 6, 2003 demanding that the lyrics of KAL HO NA HO be removed from the site. These lyrics are copyrighted, and apparently making said lyrics intelligible to people who don't speak Hindi was inflicting "damage" on Sony and accruing unlawful "gain" to BollyWHAT?. So. We decided to remove the lyrics of all albums that are released by Sony, because we're not out to "damage" anyone here. Actually, we're not even out to "gain." Our only intention is to make the cinema we love just a little more accessible to folks who, confused by aspects of Hindi cinema they don't understand, might otherwise give up on it and go back to Hollywood. In other words, this site yields no profits, sells nothing, and accepts no advertising. The only cash transactions related to BollyWHAT? are the $35 the webmistress shells out each year to keep the domain name, and the $54 she pays annually for an ad-less forum. The only "gain" we receive comes in the form of your awesome e-mails and your contributions to BollyWHAT?'s rather lively forum, both of which continue to brighten our day and make this site worth maintaining. Oftentimes, we diehard fans of Hindi popular cinema wonder why Bollywood hasn't yet hit the big time in the West. We speculate about when the Hindi-language Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon will finally take local screens by storm. This move on Sony's part doesn't bode well for that prospect, for one simple reason: songs are a big part of Hindi films. If people don't like the songs, they probably won't like the movies. And...take that final leap of logic with us...lots of people don't like songs whose meanings they don't understand. It's always more fun to sing along to words the meaning of which you actually know, right? But when it comes to songs released by Sony Music, you'll have to make do with old-fashioned guesswork, because from now on, we won't be translating any more of them. |

replied on: 2/17/2004 3:51:00 PM i think this is a bad decision. there are a lot of hindi film fans out here just like me, who don't speek the language, but thanks to the sites on the web like bollyWHAT got to know the meaning of the songs we like and began to LOVE them. i think by a step like this sony is telling us don't learn our songs and don't eaven try to understand them..! |

replied on: 2/18/2004 1:34:57 PM Yeah, most OSTs don't provide the lyrics, and the one that I have seen which did ("Lagaan") had it in devanagari script. Now of course this makes the most sense, but again...for someone not able to read or necessarily understand Hindi -- that's not too much of a help. |

replied on: 2/18/2004 1:36:07 PM Although, I gotta say, trying to decipher the "Lagaan" lyrics helped me read the devanagarai script much better. I basically knew the sound of the words from listening to the songs so much that reading it too was doable. |

replied on: 2/26/2004 7:50:43 PM Hi everyone, This site has been truly incredible in helping me understand Bollywood lyrics and learning Hindi. I also think it's very weird that Sony is forcing BollyWHAT to take the KHNH, K3G, Lagaan, and KKHH lyrics off the site. I have sort of a selfish request... I know that the KHNH lyrics were and are being e-mailed around privately on a one-to-one basis (I myself was a recipient of one of these emails. Thank you so much for sending me and others the lyrics!) Could the same thing happen with the other movies? i.e. could we e-mail the K3G, Lagaan, and KKHH lyrics around on a one-to-one basis? Sony couldn't possibly interfere with that, I hope. Plus, people around the world would still be able to get the lyrics and understand these amazing songs. I'd be truly grateful if someone could e-mail me the Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Lagaan, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai translated lyrics. Thanks so much, Rohit rmx2006@yahoo.com |

replied on: 3/8/2004 10:44:37 PM Sam, I think right after the KHNH audio was released, they cracked down on all sites that put the music out like raaga.com etc. In the process, they did not stop to analyse what was happening here but sent a letter to Meredith as well. Within a month or so after the audio was released, raaga.com had KHNH on their site and apparently, SONY does not care anymore about it. So, it is not harassing other sites. But Meredith decided to pull all Sony translations from her site. |

replied on: 3/9/2004 3:43:36 PM I had posted a thread commenting on the Sony lyrics, that maybe Sony doesn't care anymore about weather we translate and post their lyrics. So I think posting the KHNH lyrics would be safe now. But if Meredith doesn't want to post ANY of the translations for Sony movies, I respect her decision... ...But it would be nice seeing the addition of KHNH in the lyrics section of BW with a nice picture from the film.
