The Somkul Kree Stone Bearer

Somkul Kree Chapters 16-20
replied on: 7/5/2003 4:03:24 PM

The SCR Arrive

Truso led the small group through many passages in the underground network of the caves, the entrances of each path was carved into the walls by the roaring sea that once completely covered the ground they were standing on.

“This island is one big, volcanic beast long years from dying completely. In fact when I was a babe the mountain erupted, spewing fiery hot liquid and there was a cloud, that some say, was touching the stars. The lava burned anything it touched, including us, but my dad had us build our homes on the plateau for a reason. We were out of the liquids’ reach, but most of the plants and much of our food was burned, but once again my dad prepared for a disaster and previously made us stock up our food,” Truso explained to the group.

“How was the Stone of Somkul Kree spared from this disaster and these caves, too,” Kendal asked, looking up to the vast ceiling of the cave they were in.

Nyar answered, “The mouth of the volcano is above us right now and there’s a huge rock column that’s been hollowed out by the lava. It ends right at the mouth. Therefore the lava travels down the slope and misses the insides of these caves since they were built right into the volcano. You see that?” Nyar pointed to a dense yellow, cloud of gas shooting up from a crevasse, “That gas is extremely dangerous; it will burn you to a frazzle.”

As Truso led them deeper in the cave, going through the network of passages. Oni noticed the ground become hot beneath his paws; Truso noticed too, “Halt!” He looked around at the cave walls as if something were amiss.

“The caves have some of the most volcanic spots on the island. It’s usually like this so don’t worry.”

They had now been traveling for a good while and Oni was beginning to wonder if Truso had gotten lost. The thought had just crossed his mind when the tunnel, they had been traveling through, suddenly opened into wide room, displaying a trickling waterfall and a wide pool. The sunlight filtered through a few holes in the mountain, illuminating the aquamarine water and reflecting off the surface to dance on the cave walls. There were many “ooo’s” and “ahh’s” as Truso skirted the edges, of the underground lake to the opening on the far side, with his mouth opened in a big grin and his tail wagged furiously.

“We’re close to the stone guys. Watch out on this ledge it’s very narrow. Oni, you’ll come after me, Megan you’re next, then Skye and Kendal. Nyar, you’ll take the rear.”

Oni, Megan, and Skye pressed themselves against the wall to allow more space, but their toes still hung off the edge. Kendal wasn’t so self-conscience, even in the semi-darkness, but he still felt the wall for paw holds. Trouble occurred as Skye was crossing, she was in the middle of the ledge when the ground shook under their paws so hard the half of the ledge disappeared beneath her paws. She cried out and flailed as she began to fall. Kendal, being the only one that could possibly grab her, managed to catch a hold of her hand and reeled as he tried to pull her up. Nyar grabbed Kendal’s waste and both of them heaved.

Truso meanwhile pulled Oni and Megan to his side before calling back to Nyar, “Strange. Do you remember the last time the ground shook like that?”

“Aye! That was just before the volcano erupted. Be on your guard! I’m going to take the other way. See you at the stone.”

“Alright, matey!”

Megan looked wide-eyed at Truso, “Do you think the volcano will erupt while we’re still here?”

Truso nodded grimly, “More than likely. The ground shaking, the warm cave floor, and that gas are telltale signs that this beast’s getting ready to blow. If that happens then woe betide to my tribe and us. If it does blow then it’s not likely that we’re going to get our of here alive.”

“But you said that the caves were left unharmed. Were you lying to us?”

“No, but think about it. The ground shakes very badly during a volcano not to mention the mouth is right above these caves. The roof could cave in for all we know. Not to mention some lava could drip down. In fact I’m surprised that the mountain hasn’t caved in already through the years of strain it’s been through.”

Oni nodded in understanding before steering them back to their quest, “Then let’s go. I want to get out of here before this thing blows and if that’s not possible at least die trying to get the stone.”

Truso also nodded and steered them back to their course. The rock walls suddenly seem to press in on them in the deafening silence that had replaced their cheery mood. Megan and Truso walked side by side quietly while Oni walked behind them in a daydream. It was Megan that pointed out the markings on the walls.

“Oni? Oni? Hey, wake up! Look at this!”

Oni shook his head dazedly and blinked in the lantern light at the dark wall, “I can’t see anything, Megan.”

“Look closer. They’re markings on the walls, but they’re in a different language.”

Truso shifted the lantern light and then he could see them perfectly. They had been scribed on there by some kind of brush and when in the right light, gave off a white sheen in the light. The color was silver.

Oni peered closer looking at the markings, hoping to decipher them at any rate. Megan and Truso observed his face go from passive to wide-eyed and quickly to wonderment.

“The stone! It’s just down the hall. The wall says that we should basically follow the path to where it ends. Come on!”

Oni ran ahead with the two wolves shouting behind him.

“Slow down, Oni. Are you sure you won’t get lost?”

“Wait! It could be dangerous up ahead!”

Oni slowed down to a trot as he detected a wooden door that seemed to be blocking the way, but a hole in the door was carved out as a makeshift doorknob, obviously not meant to be there forever. He allowed the two wolves to catch up before opening the door.

“Us three, as friends, shall enter the room where the stone is held together. Neither of us is going to be second or last to go into the room where the power shall be held. I will try to be quick about getting it.”

Oni linked arms, Megan on the right, Truso on the left, and took a breath before all three kicked the door open to reveal a breathtaking site.

Nyar looked around at the walls of the volcano wearily, his breath coming in a short gasps.

“What’s wrong, Nyar. You look terribly frightened,” Skye asked as she too, looked at the walls surrounding them on all sides.

“Yes. My parents were killed in that eruption just two seasons after I was born. Truso’s younger by just one seaons so he doesn’t really remember it, but I remember it so vividly. There was shouting, screaming, and a great big roaring coming from the volcano. The ground shook so violently that I thought the island would split apart. The last words that I said to my parents were, “I love you,” before I was swept away by the crowd of beasts fighting to get to the plateau. I was separated from them, but the next thing I remember was looking down at the lava massacre all of the living things on the forest floor. Birds were trilling alarms, wheeling about almost running into each other as they tried to get away. I saw a few of them collapse in exhaustion. The lava incinerated those birds. We never found my parents bodies, but they were never accounted for when Darrow took role call. He adopted me into his family after that and Truso and I have become best friends, but I shall never forget that day of terror.”

“I’m sorry, Nyar. At least your parents loved you. My mother was the only one in my family that loved me. Kendal, you’re probably the luckiest of us all. You still have parents and they love you a lot,” Kendal nodded, but changed the subject hastily.

“How many passages are there into the cave where the stone is held, Nyar?”

“There are only two as far as I know. They both come out at opposite ends, I’m sure.”

“You mean you haven’t even been into the room?”

“Darrow, wouldn’t let us go in there. It was a bit of a bummer, but we didn’t dare disobey him. He can have a nasty temper when he needs it. I only hope that he’s still alive when we come out of the cave. There’s no telling what that badger will do to him if gets a hold of him. Hold it, guys! We’re here!”

Nyar walked up to the wooden door, almost exact to the one Oni, Megan, and Truso kicked open, and examined it, “Come on! Let’s go in! You two first since you’ve been traveling for so long to finally enter this room.” Nyar smiled at them and bowed to the side of the door.

Kendal and Skye waited for a brief moment before walking up and leaning against the door to open it. “Nyar, it won’t budge,” Skye said as she and Kendal futilely pushed at the door. Nyar frowned before adding his weight and it gave beneath their shoulders. They toppled into the room and gasped at the sight.

“Land ho!!!”

Brando shouted in his deep gruff voice from the bird’s nest. The crew was immediately awake and Skipper rushed out onto deck shouting to any beasts still in their cabin, “All paws on deck! Come on! Move yerselves!”

Triks rushed to the prow and leaned over it in glee. Elias held on to the scruff of his shirt to make sure he didn’t fall in, “There tis, Elias! Land!”

Elias looked out across the vast water that lay between them and the blob in the distance, barely distinct over the horizon. The rest of the SCR joined them at the front and cheered wildly.

“Yeah, we’re almost there!”

“Woohoo!”

“When do you think we’ll arrive, Skip?”

Skipper and his otters were rushing about putting out full sail as a mighty wind sped them toward their destination, “Well, if y’guys go to full speed on the oars below then we’ll reach that there island by noon.”

The SCR group immediately set about putting the otter crew to shame in the art and speed of their rowing. Not ready to be outdone, Skipper’s otters began rowing with all their might trying to match the strength of their friends.

Triks rowed happily alongside Elias, laughing at the idle threats both groups threw at each other.

“Come on, mateys! Let’s row those SCR types their arms off.”

“Takes one to know one, Brando. We’ll have all of you slumped over your oar sleeping like a baby by the time we get to Tranto.”

“We’ll see about that y’messmate! Come on, otters! Row!”

“Well, stap me rudders. Y’couldn’t possibly win!”

“We’ll see about that, Skip! We’re going to outdo you guys so bad you’ll look like dibbuns rowing instead of warriors. Haha!

“Hmmph! Impudent little, ground dweller! C’mon Skip! Let’s give them more than what they bargained for!”

The foolish banter, threats, and rowing continued until they came up to Tranto just before noon, getting their surprisingly fast and having a great time left them whirling in their heads. Lots of the crew beasts talked about how Triks almost fainted from lack of air due to laughing so hard.

Skipper himself took the tiller as the SCR group and a few otters off duty watched the island’s cliffs get closer and closer. A few dark clouds swirled around it in an intimidating manner and the waves broke against the rocks with a terrible roar.

The day, which had started so bright and sunny, was now overcast with clouds and as the beasts looked up at the walls, which were now menacing and daring to try and come any closer. Triks, though a little anxious, glared fiercely at the mountains and announced in a clear, loud voice that came back to him, “I will set foot on that island! I will and shall not falter! I will help my friends!”

Soon other beasts were shouting their tasks allowed and told the world of what they were going to do, whether it meant never coming back to the ship. Skipper also shared in a few comments as he steered for the same outlet that Oni and his group went through.

Elias, Trunks, Balto, and Kotir went into a deep conversation off to the side of others as they traveled at a steady pace through the tunnels.

“I don’t like this, Elias. Something’s wrong. I have a bad feeling about this.”

“Aye, so do I, but let’s hope that it doesn’t have to do with Oni and his friends.”

“No, Elias. I’m having the same feeling, but I feel as if a danger hardly anyone has ever encountered is lying in the future.”

“Well, there is the mad badger.”

“Yes, but a Silver Cheetah could easily defeat the badger. We all know what their strength is like. It’s something else.”

“I only hope we’ll all make it out alive.”

Elias finished the talk and Triks and the other SCR beasts faintly heard a few “Ayes” as they broke up and went about other duties; taking down the sail, helping Skip steer clear of the walls, or looking ahead at the opening.

Skip finally nosed the craft up onto the gray sandbar ringing the salty water of the ocean. Brando jumped down to tie the ship to a nearby Sycamore with its gnarled roots curving away from the nearby pool that calmly lapped the shore.

Elias’, Alex’s, Kayla’s, Kieren’s, Triks’, and Trunks’, while they disembarking, picked up the sounds of wild shouts and roars that could only mean one thing: the battle for the stone had begun. Furrowing his eyes and concentrating on stealth, Elias ran toward the battle; the group and otter warriors followed suit.
