Calabria, Ruth M. Calabria, And Benito & Lisa Calabria This material is presently being revised. We expect to republish it in about two weeks. Introduction; In his 1998 book, Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, Prof. Edward O. Wilson of Harvard, referred to in the Atlantic Monthly as one of the century’s most important scientists, suggested the possibility of the formulation of a science that would explain everything in nature in terms of one generalized concept. By everything, he meant not only the subjects we commonly think of as science – physics, chemistry, and biology – but also human behavior in all of its forms including those which usually fall under the consideration of philosophy, the humanities, economics, art, and religion. His vision was of a unification of all branches of knowledge from an evolutionary perspective. Indeed, the word consilience means “a jumping together of knowledge” or “a unification of knowledge.” Wilson further suggested that such a unified theory of everything would likely be mathematical in form. Blind Draw is a filling of Dr. Wilson’s prescription, though its details differ considerably from his particular views and projections. Blind Draw is first and foremost a new formulation of mathematics. It develops a mathematics based on how we see and sense things. We have figured out a whole new mathematics of things based not on the number of things, but on the distinctions that we make between things. In this article we use our new mathematics to explain all human experience and behavior from an evolutionary perspective. We also solve a major problem in the physical sciences with this mathematics. Blind Draw provides the foundations for a true consilience or unification of knowledge based on this new mathematics. Its range reaches from our providing a new and sweeping theoretical basis for chemistry to our explaining human experience from a mathematically based understanding of evolution. A primary focus in this article is on explaining human experience. By human experience we mean the totality of our conscious existence, our perceptions, our behaviors, our thoughts and our feelings. To explain human experience, we must explain all four of these components of experience and we must explain how they are connected with each other. There is an immediate problem in trying to do this, though, in that while our perceptions and behaviors are external and visible phenomena we can all point to when we want to discuss and understand them, our thoughts and emotions are not ‘out there’ for us to see when we discuss them and that often makes it difficult to know what it is we are talking about. Indeed, the human mind is much more suited to understanding the things it can perceive and it has evolved to do just that as we shall show. It was not designed to understand its own machinery, especially those parts it can’t see very well, its thoughts and emotions, and therein lies the problem in understanding our behavior. Human experience proceeds as a total dynamic which involves the co-operative workings of all four of its components, perceptions and behaviors and thoughts and emotions. We cannot really understand any of them individually without understanding all of them as they work together to form our moment-to-moment experiences. The revolutionary innovations of Blind Draw that make possible a clear understanding of human experience center about the invention or discovery of new mathematics that make sensible and obvious the nature of our thoughts and emotions. As we said, we have figured out a new mathematics of things based not on the number of things, but on distinctions between things. We call this new distinction-based mathematics, distinction field theory. Distinction field theory or DFT provides a new theoretical underpinning for the entirety of mathematics. It replaces set theory as the proper collective consideration of things by clarifying the nature of the distinctions we make between things. Our minds intuitively distinguish between individual things and also between kinds of things. DFT makes clear the difference between these two basic kinds of perceptual distinctions while set theory in its loose distinguishing between members of a set does not. This makes all the difference in providing a new and clear theoretical base for mathematics. DFT is a mathematics based on how we see things. It makes no arbitrary formal assumptions but arises as a natural language encoding of quantifiable perceptual experience. This natural and correct perspective on mathematics as being properly based on distinction rather than number provides for an entirely new and simple derivation and understanding of standard statistics. In an application to physical science, DFT’s understanding of the inherent imprecision of number in describing things of different sizes leads smoothly to the clarification of a long standing confusion in thermodynamics as regards the fundamental nature of temperature. DFT also provides an intuitively clear and direct explanation for entropy, a concept that has confused and mystified chemists for the last two centuries, and points the way for a swift clarification of the current fuzzy understanding of quantum mechanical physics. DFT also derives new and simpler functions for information than the information entropy of information theory. The DFT information functions are intuitively clear and have much broader, indeed universal, application. These DFT information functions derive familiar statistical functions in an astonishingly direct way and make them understandable as subsets of a broader class of mathematically well-defined generalizations the mind intuitively makes as part of its conceptual mapping of our perceptual experience. This DFT analysis also explains language in a mathematically clear and precise way in terms of its origins in perception and experience and explains its functionality for behavior. Blind Draw also interrelates DFT with an expanded and refined probability theory to develop decision theory in an evolutionary context. This makes possible clear and simple mathematical expressions and explanations for our emotions and how they evaluate and motivate our behaviors. The evolutionary underpinning of human behavior is housed within simple and clearly derived differential equations for natural selection. The mathematical innovations in Blind Draw make possible the formulation of a comprehensive mathematical science of human behavior that replaces existing psychology and clarifies its confusions and contradictions. We also include an analysis of the emotional dissatisfactions and unhappiness associated with life in modern society in the last section of the article.
