This year has been generally perceived as a poor year for Oz films, particularly in terms of box office results. Here are some interesting articles on this from Lawrie Zion in The Age, Helen Razer in The Age, and one from the Sydney Morning Herald. Personally, I have enjoyed the majority of Oz fims I have seen recently, despite some shortcomings, particularly in terms of low budgets, they are generally worthwhile IMO. I do agree that the "battlers vs the big corporations" story has now been done to death, though. There is so much more to tell from an Australian perspective. I'm looking forward to Japanese Story and Travelling Light. Apart from all of Rose's films I have seen recently (which were all good of course I have managed to catch Garage Days, Ned Kelly, Walking on Water, Rabbit Proof Fence in the past few weeks on DVD or cable. All of these films were highly entertaining but completely different from the other. Maybe I'm just too easily pleased, I dunno. I would be interested to hear other views on Oz films from both locals and those overseas. |
