Hi Cleo, glad you found us!

I still haven't had a chance to see this movie yet, hopefully this weekend too! It is only on about 8 cinemas here in Melbourne.

There are lots of reviews up on the I Capture the Castle page - and most of them are quite positive, especially about Rose's performance.

Tell us what you thought of it after you see it this weekend - and I would be interested to know how it compares to the book, too.

Saw this movie today. My coworker and I both left the office early, and with nothing to do, we headed up to LA and caught ICTC along with Whale Rider.

Welcome, Cleo. I hope you are enjoying the novel and (soon) the film! I remember first reading ICTC when I was a college student a few years back. Anyway, I'll spare you guys any real details so as not to spoil either the novel or the movie for anyone.

Overall, I liked it. Of course, like any adaptation, there are omissions, shifting of scenes/dialogue, but I think the finished product stays pretty true to the novel. They captured the subtle humor of Smith's writing quite nicely. My recollection of the second half of the novel isn't quite as good as what I remember of the first, but it seemed like everything stays rather true to the original. The pacing of a film is certainly quicker than that of a novel, and I really got that sense from the movie. The performances are all around well done. Like everyone else has mentioned already, Rose's performance is excellent--esp. in the latter half of the film when the plot reveals more layers to her character. She really does look quite pretty as well, again esp. (imo) in the latter half of the film. I know this is a site devoted to her and all, and I'm certainly a fan, but it's worth mentioning that Romola Garai's performance was awesome--very well cast.

Oh, and I must mention that I really liked the set design/costumes (green dye!) of this movie. Wherever they shot the castle scenes really captured the impoverished feel of Mortmain's abode. The actors' "look," everything from costumes to who was actually cast really "fit." To me, all of the visual elements of this film were really as I imagined them when I read the novel. In a word, excellent.

Still reading?

Anyways, I enjoyed this film and I do hope those of you who catch this film enjoy it as well.

I went to see I Capture The Castle today (finally!) and I loved it. I haven't read the novel, so I went along with an open mind and I was very impressed. The highlight of this film was the strength of all the performances, led by the two sisters - Rose who was absolutely gorgeous, I loved the way her character developed (plus she carried off the English accent very well!), and Romola Garai, who imo was even better. I guess because Romola as Cassandra was narrating the story, and everything was seen from her perspective she really carried this film.
I actually enjoyed Rose's performance in the first half of the film, she didn't have as much screen time in the second half and I loved the long haired rough and ready look, when her character was being more herself (sorry I don't wan't to give anything away too ) But she did look absolutely stunning in some of those '30's outfits.
I thought it was exceptionally well filmed, and really captured the essence of the times (as I imagine them) - the shots of London were very well done too.
I think Romola is really a talent to watch, and it will be interesting to see her future work, despite her next role being "Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights" (what the?!), followed by another period piece, "Vanity Fair" with Reese Witherspoon.
BTW Sinead Cusack, who played Mrs Cotton, was hardly recognisable from the last time she starred with Rose, as Frank in My Mother Frank.
Rose should be very proud of her work, another feather in her cap.

Box office figures for week 2:

Australia - No.10 on the chart [$215,257 from 34 screens, cumulative total $588,442]

USA - No.31 on the chart [$126,209 from 28 screens, total $202,146]

In the UK, the film grossed £725,775 after a five week run.

Here's some interesting box office trivia - Rose has appeared in the 12th highest grossing film of all time - Star Wars EpII which made US $310 Million

I started reading the book the night I saw the movie. So far I think the adaptation has been done really well, obviously as you said ToyMachine there are omissions and changes to scenes and dialogue but overall the film is very much in the spirit of the book.

The big advantages of reading the book AFTER seeing the film are you can see the characters as you are reading (esp Rose ), and I have found most books to be better than their film so am then disappointed when I see the film (eg LOTR).

It's also funny to pick up differences - like one I noticed:
FILM - Rose: I'd marry a chimpanzee if it had money
BOOK - Rose: I'd marry the devil if he had money

Anyone else picked up any quirky differences?

BTW I was reading the Iliad but found it incredibly tough going, there's only so many ways to describe people being killed on the battlefield, it's very repetitive, I find the Gods annoying (I believe they won't feature as heavily in the Troy film as in the Iliad), there's hardly any of Briseis in it - but then I'm no scholar I'll probably try to finish it closer to when Troy is coming out.

Hi guys

I didn't get to see the movie on the weekend

We just bought a new puppy so we had others things to do. So the book has been put down a bit to lately. I have about 100 pages to go. hmmmm I have already looked at other things on the net and have read ahead so I already know what happens ( I do this all the time with books) have to know what happens if I like a character.

This weekend is out to sadly going to a 21st so I don't think there will be time as I have to travel to Sydney.

Hopefully it will still be showing!

Cleo, there's nothing like the smell of a new puppy so you're excused for not seeing ICTC - for now! But cheating on books is inexcusable! (Says I who has given up on the Iliad).
I'm sure it will still be showing for a few weeks yet.

Cannot believe that this film got an 'R' rating in the States - for a brief glimpse of nudity.

Is rated 'R' in the States the same as here in Oz - meaning no one under 18 allowed? Cassandra the main character in the film is 17!!

Sorry but that is just ridiculous when so many films with violence, death and glorification of weapons can be seen by kids. The nudity is not even part of a sex scene!

Just had to get that off my chest...

trbs, I hadn't even realized it was rated R. Very odd indeed. It would have to be because of the nudity though. A few years ago, Titanic almost got an R rating. James Cameron talked them out of it, saying the nudity was part of an "art" scene. He knew he wouldn't get that teenage audience if it wasn't PG-13. Go figure.

Was able to see the film this morning. I really liked it. Beautifully filmed and wonderfully acted. Funny, moving, and emotional. I was excited from the start when I saw Rose's name in the opening credits. I thought she did an outstanding job, especially in the scenes with her sister. And poor Stephen.

I'm looking forward to reading the book as I felt a few items were rushed or glossed over. And I was a little disappointed we didn't get to see one of the couple's first kiss.

Ebert and Roeper, America's most popular film credits, reviewed the film a last week ago on their show. It got a thumbs up and a thumbs down. You can here their comments, and dialogue from the film here: ICTC Review

Roger Ebert seems to agree with trbs. Here's what he had to say at the end of his lovely review for ICTC.

"Note: The R rating ("for brief nudity") is another attempt by the MPAA to steer teenagers away from useful and sophisticated entertainments, and toward vulgarity and violence. If this movie is R and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" is PG-13, then the rating board has no shame. Better the Angels as strippers than an innocent nipple during a swim in the castle moat?"

Thanks for that link, Andé. Glad to see I'm not the only one with that opinion Charlies Angels is so obviously sold on sex and it's PG-13?! LOL, I didn't even notice the nipple in the castle moat swim scene!

Not having seen it yet when you mentioned that there was nudity I was hoping it would be the guy that plays Neil (pretty cute)

oh well

It's strange how some things are rated.
